Brothers Rick and Michael Mast, who started making chocolate in their Brooklyn apartment, have turned their craft into a hot brand. Their artisanally-made bars can now be found in gourmet markets like Dean & Deluca. However, a full appreciation of the Mast Brothers phenomenon, requires a visit to their Williamsburg shop, where you will be seduced by the strong aroma of cocoa beans as they are poured out of burlap sacks, ground up, and roasted. It’s easy to feel like a kid in an old-fashioned candy store here. Try a free sample and you will find the chocolate is smooth and dark, with a bitterness offset by complex flavors like black truffles, Serrano peppers, vanilla, and sea salt. The bars are a treat to the eyes as well, wrapped in bold, vintage-inspired patterned papers. Trust me, you will not leave empty-handed.
